NOTES OF INTEREST:

Just Crochet/Craft Idea's: It's been a very long time since I have posted anything to my Blog. Due to family and life in general, I got a little detoured. I will try to get time to type up some new entries. I have created a lot of items, gave them away and did not take pictures or type them up. We lost both of our boys this year. Jiggy in March and Stubby in July. We have a new friend her name is MayBee (due to the fact that we weren't quite sure about keeping her). She's 4 years old and full of energy. I make her Kitty Strings with yarn, it was such a hit, I donated some to the local animal shelter. I'll try to put them on the Blog next week. As usual, if you have questions about crafting or crochet, I will answer them under the post where you leave the comment. Thanks for stopping by. Birdie

Al's Dickey

My Husband plays tennis 4 days a week. We live in Florida, but because of the sea breeze and the dampness, it gets pretty cool. I know!! It's nothing like up north, but it does get bone chilling. He wears tennis shorts and shirt and when really cool a sweatshirt. He complained about his neck being cold, so I searched and searched for a crochet dickey pattern. I found lots of knit ones and could have made one, but I really love crochet, so here's my rendition of a crocheted dickey. Hope your men enjoy it as much as Al.

  4. This pattern is absolutely brilliant! I often wear dickeys and was trying to design a crocheted one, but not having much luck. Why didn't I think of this? I plan to make several in various colors. Thank you for this great pattern!! Marti

    1. So glad you enjoyed the pattern. It can be made smaller or larger by going down or up 1 size on the hook. Let me know how they come out, Birdie

    1. Actually this Dickey will stretch to fit an 181/2 snuggly, There are 2 different ways to enlarge, #1 - I would use a USK/10.5/6.5mm and use the same pattern with Lion Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn (this will keep it soft) or Use the original USJ/10/6mm hook with the Yarn I used in Lion Brand Vanna and add 2 st plus 2 rows to the collar and add 8 stitches to the row count and remember to include two stitches in your count between the corners as you work. This should fit a big necked guy. Hope this helps, Birdie

  7. LOVE this pattern. My hubby's a big guy, but it fits him perfectly. I've already made four of them for family and friends! Much appreciated up here in the California mountains where it snows and temps have been in the single digits. Thanks for the pattern, Birdie!

    1. You made my day. I am so glad someone is using the pattern. I have a daughter in Wisconsin that is also putting up with the low temperatures. Florida is a little warm, but, I do envy your mountains and you're welcome, Birdie

  8. I would like to make this for my 5 year old son. His school doesn't allow scarves, only neck warmers. I am not quite sure how to reduce it in size to fit a child. On the site I followed to find this pattern it lists this project as intermediate. I am still basically a beginner but I know all these stitches really well. I've been crocheting squares for years but this would be my first article of clothing. I hope I am not trying something too difficult. I will probably make it in the original size first just to get a feel for it but maybe you know how best to proceed to reduce it for my own little man?

    1. Jennifer, I made one for a female friend whos neck was 15 inches. You can adjust this pattern for a child by first Using an H6/5mm hook with the Worsted Weight yarn. Start by ch 12 instead of 14 and work the pattern basically the same for the neck back and forth in blo, but, measure your childs neck and make the collar the same length in inches (laying flat without stretching). You will have fewer stitches around after joining with slip stitches. Follow shoulder area pattern and sc in each row end around, your count should divide by 4 equally plus your 4 stitches for the 3 stitch corner increases. Once you find your 4 sides # of stitches; you should be able to work the same as in the pattern but, the stitch count will be less. Also measure the child's shoulders from shoulder across to shoulder, and decrease the rows to match the length from shoulder to shoulder. Hope this helps. I know you can do it, Birdie

  9. I stumbled on your pattern from allfreecrochet.com and I'm glad I did!! My dad rides motorcycles and uses a handkerchief to cover his neck. We also live in FL so I know about the cold, too! I think this will keep him much warmer when he rides in the winter. Thank you for sharing this pattern!!

  10. I hope he loves it as much as my hubby. Thank you so much for showing interest. I know others have made it for their cycle riding guys too. One tip, make sure you measure his neck and add or decrease accordingly. It does stretch for comfort. Birdie...

  12. Sorry, no pdf's, etc. You can do it the old fashioned way. Highlight the pattern, right click, copy and paste it into your msword, etc. you can click over the picture, right click, copy paste the same way. Then print from the msword doc.

    1. THANK YOU FOR TRYING THE PATTERN. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY IT ISN'T WORKING FOR YOU. MAYBE YOU CAN MAKE SURE YOU COUNT AS YOU GO (MIGHT BE ADDING A STITCH) OR IF YOUR STITCHES ARE LOOSE TRY DOING ONE LESS ON THE SIDES BETWEEN THE CORNERS. IT DOES TEND TO SIT A LITTLE LOOSE UNTIL YOU GET A BUNCH OF ROWS COMPLETED THOUGH, YOU CAN THEN BLOCK IT WHE YOU FINISH. BDI

  14. I am attempting to make this for hubby to wear on his motorcycle rides. I made the collar with no problem. I am stuck on row 1 of the shoulders. Where in the world do I stick the hook for the 56 stitches? I have been stuck on this for days.

  15. Make the Collar through row 56, then crochet the end rows 1 and 56 together (this will form a circle for the neck) where you end up is where you work the row 1 shoulder area (it will be worked in the round, but will square off in the pattern to form shoulders) you then ch 1 and sc in the end st of each of those 56 rows in the collar. Hope this helps. With this pattern the instructions are a little confusing, so go slow and good luck, Birdie

  16. I took a picture but dont know how to post it to your blog. I am new to crochet. My issue is knowing in which holes to stick the row 1 in for the shoulders. It says the end of each stitch, but I dont know which hole that is. How can I get my photo looked at so someone can actually point to the right place to insert the hook that describes the end of each row. there are more than 56 holes.

  17. I was able to figure it out. Fits hubby perfect. Thanks for sharing!

  18. I do not allow posting to my blog. I understand what you want. First make sure you "do not fasten off" when making the collar, then lay the 2 ends of that piece together so you can sc through both thicknesses of the 2 rows (Row 1 and row 56) all the way across; this creates the collar area, then you will be at the edge, turn the collar edge, facing up (this is the row edges) of the collar, then you work around the collar,it will become the shoulder area, ch 1 and start working your 56 sc around the collar. This is as clear as I can make it. Follow the directions from this point. You could go to the Lionbrand link on the left above, register and watch their free video's under instructions for crocheting in a circle, that may help. Good luck, Birdie
